Taking second fiddle to that of Texas Hold'em there has been a recent surge in the number of Omaha players. With more and more players starting to play the game there has never been a better time to get involved and with the ever increasing popularity of the game, availability online is only going to improve.
If you would like a refresher into how to play this game, here is a recap of the rules.
The rules are much like Texas Hold'em, high-low is a community card game. The game is played much like Omaha except in this game with every hand dealt, there is potentially 2 winners splitting the pot, one player for the high hand and one player who qualifies for the best low hand.
Each player in Hi Lo is dealt 4 hole cards face down and there are 5 community cards dealt to the board as illustrated below.
All players are dealt 4 hole cards (pre flop- first round of betting)
The Flop (3 community cards dealt- second round of betting)
The Turn (4th community card- third round of betting)
The River (5th community card- fourth round of betting
To make the best hand you must use exactly two hole cards (these care the cards in your hand), and three board cards (known as community cards as all players may use these cards). To qualify for a low hand you must have all 5 cards 8 or lower, an ace counting as the lowest. It is very possible that no player will qualify for the low hand. In this game there will always be a winner of the high hand but it may be that no player has a low hand. In this case the player with the best high hand would take down the whole pot.
It is possible to have a straight of a flush but you will not have a pair. The lowest possible hand is A-2-3-4-5. The highest possible combination of cards that you can have that still qualifies as a low hand is 8-7-6-5-4. After the river is dealt and final bets made, there is a showdown and players show their cards.
The player with the best high hand wins half the pot and the player with the highest low hand wins the other half.
Should the player who has the highest high hand find that no one has a qualifying low hand, he/she wins the entire pot. In hi lo this is also known as 'Scooping the pot'.
