There are a few different variations of Omaha with the Hi-Lo split variation more popular in America. Across the European countries they only really play Omaha High which means that the pot is not split and one winner takes the pot (scooping the pot).

If you have played Hold'em then you will have a good start into understanding how this game is played as the betting structure is the same as is the ranking of hands. If you would like a refresher into how to play Omaha, here is a brief recap.

This game has the same number of community cards (the shared cards) as holdem (5). The rules are such that you must use exactly 2 out of the four cards in your hand with any 3 on the board to make the best possible 5 card poker hand. There
tends to see lots more flushes, straights and full houses as the player has more cards to choose from when trying to make the best possible hand.

The typical game is illustrated below for you.

All players are dealt 4 Hole cards (pre flop) + Round of Betting

Omaha Poker Rules : Pre Flop

The Flop (3 community cards dealt) + Round of Betting

Omaha Poker Rules : The Flop

The Turn (4th community card) + Round of Betting

Omaha Poker Rules : The Turn

The River (5th community card) + Round of Betting

Omaha Poker Rules : The River

SHOWDOWN (Players show their cards)

In tournament Omaha you should have a strategy to play with. You should know what cards are playable hands for you and what to steer clear of. Remember that unlike Hold'em where a big pair pre flop is a big favorite, as you get more hole cards in Omaha there are a lot more opportunities for your hand to be beaten post flop so don't get married to your hands.
