Joe Bartholdi wins the WPT championship
We have a new World Poker Tour champion. After seven days of play, battling a field of 605 players, the young poker pro Joe Bartholdi came out as the winner. And apart from the prestigious WPT title he received $3,760,165 for his achievement.
In the beginning of the final day there where six players left. The first to be knocked out was Men "The Master" Nguyen. Men was the shortest stack going in to the final table and found pocket tens in the hole. He moved all-in and was instantly called by Claus Nielsen who had pocket queens. Men's hand didn't improve, and he was out in sixth place.
James van Alstyne's had a bad day. He began the day in the chip lead, but lost most of his stack in a large pot against Roland de Wolfe. Left with only $10,000 he was knocked out in the very next hand.
The Danish attorney Claus Nielsen finished fourth. He went all in with a pair of queens but was beaten by Joe Bartholdi's who had a flush.
We where down to the final three. Roland de Wolf got pocket sixes and went all-in against Bartholdi's pocket queens. And when Bartholdi flopped a set de Wolf was out. He earned $1,025,205 for coming in third.
Joe Bartholdi and David Mathew battled it out heads up. Bartholdi had a 3-1 chip lead starting out. Mathew, who qualified for $25 online, managed to make some serious damage to Bartholdi's stack and took over the lead. But Bartholdi was far from beaten and came back and won the match. In the final hand Bartholdi flopped a pair and Mathew a flush draw, but when the flush never came it was all over. Mathew's impressive second place gave him $1,903,950.
But the man of the day was Joe Bartholdi. This was by far the greatest achievement in the young poker pro's career. And apart from becoming the World Poker Tour Champion he also received $3,760,165 in price money.
