Hitting Quads in Poker

Quads or four of a kind) is the name of the hand that consists of four cards of the same value - .i.e. 10 10 10 10. This is a very strong hand and it's even rarer that this hand won't be the winning hand, as it's only beaten by a Straight Flush and Royal Flush.

As with any hand, the stronger the hand gets, the less likely it is that you will actually hit it. The odds of getting four of a kind is 1 in every 4,165 hands. In community card games such as Holdem and Omaha, quads can be made using any combination of hole cards and community cards. A player does not need to hold a pair in hand as he could make the hand with three cards of the same value on the board. Should i hold A - 10 and the board reads 10-10-10-5, this would still be four of a kind.

In poker rooms online, there is often a bad beat jackpot which is paid out when a player loses with quad 8's (usually) or better.
