Under the Gun (Poker)

Under the Gun is the position and player immediately left of the big blind and is the first to act. The dealer button in any game of poker indicates the order of play. The player left of the dealer posts the small blind and the next again position posts This guy has taken things too far!the big blind.

Playing under the gun does not give positional advantage. The disadvantage of playing in this position is that you do not get any information about your opponents hands. Additionally, in a ten seater game, there are nine other hands behind you that could be better than yours. The player in last position is known as cut-off. This player has an advantage over everyone else, particularly the player under the gun as he gets to see what the whole table does before determining how to play his hand.

Under the Gun - Table Position

As you can see from the example above, Carol is under the gun just left of the big blind.

It is always good to look at an example of a semi strong hand and compare being first to act in comparison to being last. Let's assume that you hold A Club 10 Club which is a pretty strong hand. You are first to act and let's assume that you post a bet, three times the BB. A few players fold and then you see a raise and a subsequent re-raise. Do you think your hand is any good, well no is the short answer and it has taken you a bet three times the big blind to find this out.

Now if you were in last position (or nearly last to act), you would have seen the raise and re-raise and would have folded, without committing any chips to the pot. This is positional advantage. if the action had got to you and there had only been callers, you would think that you had the best hand and could have raised. The information you get from watching how players play their hand is immense in poker. It is important to note that the dealer button moves clockwise round the table, so each player gets their turn in each position.
