How to Play Medium Pairs Post Flop (Poker)

You should take card when playing medium pairs post flop. Medium Pairs are TT, 99 and 88. When you play these hands you really want to improve on the flop. When playing any pairs you want to have no over cards on the flop to give yourself confidence that your pair is still in front.

The problem with these cards is that you are likely to have more over cards on the flop. If the flop has any A-K-Q or J there is a fair chance that your medium pair is no good. So as a rule, the smaller your pair, the greater chance there is that there will be overcards on the flop.

If there are no over cards on the flop you may assume that you have the best hand but be cautious of bunched cards. For instance if you have a medium pair, say 99 and the flop reads 5-6-8 you can raise but know that there are a lot of cards that could come on the turn that could beat you.

With a number of cards that can land you in trouble you have to play with care and be aggressive (don't give free or cheap cards). A Low Limit Hold'em player will call a straight draw or a flush draw regardless of a raise. You will probably be the best with no over cards but be prepared to fold if the turn works against you and the betting gets serious.

When you are facing one or two over cards and you do not have a big draw you should check or fold. In this case there is every chance you have as few as 2 outs so you have next to no chance of improving.

So in summary, hope to hit your set. If there are over cards on the flop be careful and judge your hands strength on the betting. If there are over cards and you have a good draw you have a few more outs so call a raise and see if you can improve.

2 or more raises and you should fold unless you have more than 8 outs. Remember, there is no shame in folding, especially with Medium Pairs post flop when you have missed.
