Limit Poker Tournament Rules

For those of you who have played in limit tournaments, you will know that you play the same way as a normal tournament except that there is a cap (limit) on what can be bet following players posting the big and small blinds. Visit our guide on the structure of poker tournaments and the blind structure of a typical tournament (Off and Online).

In a tournament as the blinds increase so will the maximum bet that can be made. To see how the blinds increase through the course of a tournament please visit our guide to the structure of poker tournaments. Fixed-Limit competitions will have two limit amounts specified. This could be 20/40 (chips). Look at the 20/40 scenario- the small blind will be 20 chips and the big blind will be 40 chips. These are the compulsory bets that must be made before play begins. The bets after the blinds had been met would be in denominations of 20 chips and raises would be 40 chips (maximum) - the only exception in a limit game would be if a player bets 20 chips, the next player raises (to 40 chips) and a third raise occurs - this would then be a raise for twice the bet, now 80 chips.

Any single raise in a limit game is twice the previous bet (as a minimum). So as the blinds move up so will the betting limit. You will be still betting in the same increments. Other rules which will apply are indicated below:

Other Tournament Rules

A player cannot change seats after the tournament has started, except when the tables are being "balanced" as players are eliminated.

Tournaments end when one player wins all the other players' chips.

When there are only two players remaining, the player with the dealer button will post the small blind and will act first on the opening round.
