Over Cards (Poker)
Over cards in poker refers to cards that are on the board that are higher in value than the hand that you hold. For instance if you hold 10-10 pre flop, the one thing you don't want to see on the flop is any card over 10, aka over cards. The reason for this is that if there are any cards higher than 10, then there is a greater chance that a player will hit a bigger pair than you.
Where no over cards hit, there is also a greater chance of winning a big pot as your hand will be well disguised. For instance you hold Q
Q
which is a pretty good starting hand. There are no raisers and the board reads 5
6
10
. Looking at this board there is a real opportunity to extract chips from your opponents, especially if a player has paired his 10. A player holding A-10 will find it very difficult to fold top pair with a good kicker. In terms of your hand, you have no over cards (a card on the board higher than a Q) so will likely be ahead, unless you have been unfortunate enough to run into a set or two pair (see hand rankings).
