Stone Cold Nuts

You could be forgiven for assuming that the term Stone Cold Nuts could have something to do with refrigerated food. Then again, why would you serve cold nuts? This term is used for the best possible hand that can be made in a hand of poker where no cards could be dealt to make another player a better hand.

This differs to the 'nuts' as this hand can't potentially be shared. An ace high straight would be the nut straight assuming this was the best hand available but it would be possible for another player to have the same hand. The Stone Cold Nuts means that this hand would be the only winner, the best hand available from the cards that have been dealt.

An example of this might be a suited Ace on a board that doesn't pair or making quads on the turn with only one card paired on the board (and the others below the value of your quads). You know that you will win the pot and your attention should be focused on how to extract the most amount of chips from your opponents.

It is important to look at some examples as novice players often mislabel their hand as the 'SCN' too early in the hand. You hold the snowmen, 88 and the flop comes 8- 8-3. At this point you have the nuts as their is no other two cards that could be held by your opponent that could give him a better hand. The turn comes an A. At this point you no longer have the nuts as an opponent could hold a better set. What's more if the river brought another ace they would have quad Aces. If the turn had come any card lower than a 7, you would hold the stone cold nuts. The reason for this is that even if another play held a pair of sevens and was sitting on trip sevens (see trips), the best they could hope to make would be quad sevens, which would still be a losing hand to your quad eights.

The Stone Cold Nuts is the best possible hand where no cards could come to overturn your hand.
