Posted:July 2012

The 43rd annual World Series of Poker officially got underway last weekend much to the delight of poker players across the globe. Saturday’s day 1a saw 1,066 players turn up for the event held in Las Vegas. Double the players turned up on Sunday, with a total of 2,114 in attendance whilst yesterday saw a remarkable 3,418 players appear for the Day 1c, making it the biggest attendance for a one day main event in the history of the championship.

By today over 6,598 players have entered the competition in some form or another; with a prize pool estimated to be well over the sixty million dollars mark. Last night, Randy Haddox took pole position in the race to win the 1c pot by racking up 188,275 chips in what turned out to be a very productive day for the current chip leader.

In the day 1a and 1b standings, William John led the way with 266,700 chips with John Hoang taking 180,000 chips respectively. Newcomer Viktor Blom, playing in his first World Series of Poker event proved that beginners luck can happen in major tournaments when he left day 1c with a total of 110,225 chips and the Swede’s return on Day 2c is hotly anticipated.

Elsewhere several other players left the tables with some semblance of a roll on the go, mediocre games were the story of the day for Doyle Brunson, Joe Cada, Johnny Chan and Antonio Esfandiari who counted up 81,400; 117,375; 82,300 and 78,925 respectively.
