888 Poker Surprises Investors With Marked Improvement

Posted:August 2012

It seems as though it was only a few short months ago the 888 Poker online was in a fight for its life. Strangely enough, this website had done really well up until 2011. Instead of selling out to the competition – in this case Ladbrokes – 888 Poker went for broke, threw their chips on the table, and won the tie breaker. They also launched a revamped poker product that fans of this website took to like ducks to water. Now the online gaming company has surprised investors with improved forecasts for the year. It is hard to believe that a year such as 2011 could be repeated now that profits are said to be “materially ahead of expectations”. In 2011 profits dropped by a mahoosive 44% to only £3.8 million.

There has also been much made of the fact that Gigi Levy finally left the company after serving as COO for a number of years, and then taking a seat on the board. Whether or not this has made a difference to the profits of this top poker site, is really not being said. However, we know that he left on good terms, and don’t believe he was entirely at fault alone for the non-performance and ‘crisis’ of the brand. Although they are saying that New CEO - Brian Mattingley – has driven the business away from unprofitable B2B contracts.

As well as poker, the casino products have been significantly pumped up, and although the next six months might be the cause of a knock, from the Olympic games, they are still expecting good results. I has been suggested that these games will draw more punters away from online poker and towards online sports betting. This is not an entirely bad thing however, as the 888 brand has a strong presence in this game too.
