Big Money Looms at Aussie Millions 2014

Posted:December 2013

The Aussie Millions has established itself as one of the biggest events in the poker year. And though the Main Event draws the most attention, the Aussie Millions includes a full series of tournaments contested over several weeks in January and February.

Again in 2014, all of the action will be taking place at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia. The first of 20 events will be played on January 23. It has an (AU) $1,100 buy-in and even this first tournament is such a big event that it has three separate Day 1 competitions (a,b and c.)

Tournament 1 will be a No Limit Hold 'em event, but there are several different formats offered during the weeks of competition. Tournament 2, for example, which will be played on January 26, combines No Limit Hold 'em with Pot Limit Omaha. The buy-in to this event is also (AU) $1,100. There will be another mixed event near the end of the Aussie Millions on February 7. It features a H.O.R.S.E. Format (Hold 'em, Omaha, Razz, Stud and Eights or Better.) This tournament has a buy-in of (AU) $2,500.

The other tournament formats in this Melbourne event include a Shootout, a Bounty. a Six-Max Event and a three-day tournament that features the new “Accumulator” rules. Your totals during the first two days of that competition will be added together to form your chip stack for the final day of the tournament. Each Day 1 of the Accumulator tournament has a separate buy-in of $1,100.

By far the most expensive entrance fee is for an event that will take place during the last two days of the Aussie Millions. It is the “$250,000 Challenge,” which will begin on February 9. There will be a similar high-roller tournament earlier in the Aussie Millions, the “$100,000 Challenge,” which will be played on February 7-8.

The most prestigious and publicized event of the Aussie Millions, the Main Event, will begin on February 2. To handle the expected large field, there will be Day 1 competition on three days. The Main Event final table will be contested on February 7. Of course you can make plans to attend the Aussie Millions and buy in to several of the tournaments. But many of the leading online poker rooms are also offering satellites to the event. Their prizes include money for travel and expenses in addition to the Main Event buy-in.

If you are looking to qualify by satellite, you can qualify now on Titan Poker or PokerStars.
