November 9 - WSOP 2015

Posted:November 2015

The 2015 WSOP kicking into action on May 27th and 68 bracelet events later, ending on the No Limit Hold'em $10,000 main event , the curtain was drawn on the 46th annual World Series of Poker - well nearly. There is only the small matter of the November 9 to wrap up.

The main event kicked off on July 5 with the first of three starting flights, attracting 6420 players, 263 players less than in 2014. Each of these players footed the sizeable $10,000 buy in, making a total prize pool for the event a still impressive  $60,348,000 guaranteeing first place a cool $7,683,346.

Play finished with just 9 to make up the November 9 with everyone who has made the final table set to take home 7 figures. Daniel Negreanu narrowly missed out falling just short in 11th. "This is a bigger stage than any stage in the world," Negreanu said in a post match interview. "This is the one event that people who don't watch poker everyday care about. This is the one that makes mainstream news, and it's the most hyped."

Negreanu has pretty much won what there is to win, having taken down. His first win came back at the 1997 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods, where he won at 21. In 1998 he took down the $2,000 pot-limit Hold'em at the WSOP, making him the youngest ever bracelet winner. Since then he sits on top of the all time poker player earnings list with over $30M. He also has to his name 6 WSOP bracelets, including 82 money finishes, 2 World Poker Tour titles (19 money finishes) and 5 EPT final tables. In 2014 he was entered into the poker hall of fame along with Jack McClelland.

For many finishing 11th and taking home $526,778 would be a good days work. When asked “what’s next” for him, Negreanu replied “vodka” and then laughed. “I think the biggest disappointment is thinking about all the extracurricular things I could have done as part of the November Nine, up the ratings and get people involved,” Negreanu, a PokerStars sponsored pro, said. “From that aspect, it would have been great if I had made it, but I wasn’t going to alter my play in such a way that I would just squeak in. I was going for the win.”
