Poker Styled Slot Machines

Posted:October 2017

Poker styled slot machines have become more mainstream in the last decade due to the surge in the popularity of poker. Whilst there has been a resurgence in recent times, poker style slot machines are not a new concept.

Sittman and Pitt of Brooklyn New York developed the first gaming machine back in 1891 which was the starting point in the history of the slot machine. Back then there was no automatic payout. Whilst getting a couple of aces might have got the player a free beer, a bigger hand such as a straight flush might have got them a beer and some free cigars. The level of payouts were down to the establishments, unlike the set payouts we would see on machines today. It's unknown exactly where the automatic payout was introduced however it's believed to have been introduced somewhere between 1887 and 1895.

It wasn't until 1963 that the first fully electric slot machine with automatic payout of up to 500 coins was introduced by Bally Manufacturing (later renamed Bally Entertainment), a pinball and slot machine manufacturer. To see how much things have advance, try new online slot machines here.

It was as late as 1976 before the first real video slot machine was developed by the Las-Vegas based Fortune Coin Co. The slot used  a 'modified 19-inch (48 cm) Sony Trinitron colour receiver for the display and logic boards for all slot machine functions'. This machine went on trial in the Las Vegas Hilton hotel and was subsequently approved by the Nevada State Gaming Commission. With the success they saw, Fortune Coint Co were bought out, along with all their slot machine technology in 1978 by International Gaming Technology (IGT).

Poker styled slot machines are more favoured amongst poker players as there is more skill than their traditional slot machines. On a traditional slot machine, you enter money and press a button. Beyond that, it's down to luck.  There are no decisions to be made after the game has started. This lack of control on the outcome is seen by many poker players as a negative result.

Whilst there are elements of luck in poker, there is a huge amount of skill in becoming a winning poker player. Any slot game that introduces decisions during game play will always be seen as a big attraction.

Video poker is another popular option and again is different in that there are decisions players make after the game has started by way of holding and discarding cards - this influences the outcome. Again this ability to influence the outcome is seen as a major attraction to poker players who are accustomed to applying skill to make their money at the tables.

With the vastly improved graphics and customisation that we see in today's slots machines, the poker styled slot machines are seen as a popular option amongst poker players. With more and more games on offer than ever before and a massive increase in payouts, there hasn't been a better time to get involved in the wide array of poker styled slot machines that are currently available.
