Off Suit (Poker)

Off suit in poker refers to a players starting hand or hole cards in Holdem, that are not of the same suit, or off suit. The suit of the stating hands will become more relevant once the flop is dealt. Pre flop, suited cards only add a couple of percent to ones chances of winning the hand.

An example of unsuited cards might be 9 Spade 10 Heart (as the spade and the heart are different) where as the same hand of the same suit (9 Spade 10 Spade) would be considered suited as both cards are of the same suit. One of the key reasons why players prefer suited cards, is that it introduces increased opportunity for a player to his a flush. In community card game such as Holdem, the standalone value of hole cards is not affected by suit. For instance, the 10 Spade is not of more value than 10 Heart. All suits are equal until the player uses them along with the board cards to make the best hand.

Nevertheless, unsuited cards are a worse starting hand than any hole suited cards. Having the ace in an unsuited starting hand is considered second best in the event that four cards of the same suit are dealt to the board (making you an ace high flush).
