Off Suit Starting Hand (Poker)
Off suit refers to a players starting hands in which the hole cards are not of the same suit - also referred to as 'off suit'. The suit of the stating hands will become more relevant once the flop is dealt. Pre flop, suited cards only add a couple of percent to ones chances of winning the hand. Even still, having suited cards is better as you have more chance of hitting a flush or straight flush.
An example of unsuited cards might be 9 10 (as opposed to 9 10 which would be 'suited') where as the same hand of the same suit (9 10) would be considered suited as both cards are of the same suit. One of the key reasons why players prefer suited cards is that it opens the door to more hands that a player can hit. In community card games such as Texas Hold'em, the standalone value of hole cards is not affected by suit. For instance, the 10 is not of more value than 10. All suits are equal until the player uses in conjunction with other cards that are available in the hand.
Having the ace in an unsuited starting hand is considered second best. The reason is that should four cards of the same suit be dealt to the board, the player with the ace would have the best possible flush, barring any straight flush or full house or better.
