Overbet

An overbet in poker occurs when a player bets more than the value of the pot. There are a number of reasons why a player might do this. They might have little intelligence to understand that they are risking more than the size of the pot, which under normal circumstances is not the right thing to do.

Of course there are a number of deceptive plays that use the overbet as a very effective strategy and used correctly can extract more chips than you would otherwise have won. The problem with the overbet is that it can look like a weak play which could end up getting called by top pair or similar.

Bluff Overbet

The bluff overbet can be an effective tool when used at the right time and can cost you your stack when your timing is off. There are two main ways that you can take down a pot in poker. Firstly you can have the best hand at showdown or you can bluff or semi bluff which is to force enough of a bet to get everyone else to fold.

The bluff overbet is the later of the two when you put a bet in larger than the pot with no hand or prospect of improving. This is extremely dangerous as should you run into a hand, you will be in real trouble. This overbet is effective as even if a player hits top pair with a good kicker, he would be scared of running into two pair, trips or better. Having to commit your entire stack just to find out if not ideal and it is this reason that a bluff overbet can get the rest of the table to fold.

Overbet on a Big Hand

The overbet when on a big hand can be very useful and as i said, can look weak at times. This play is particularly useful when there is a monster pot as it will look like you are just trying to force players out of the pot when actually you are desperate for a call. There will be times when you massively overbet the pot and everyone folds leaving you broken that you didn't play it a low slower.

There is no sure thing in poker, sometimes this play will reap rewards and other times it will not.
