Set (Poker)

A set in poker is three of a kind (aka trips, three of a kind) and on the flop represents a big hand assuming that the board does not pair. A set can be made up of any three cards of the same value and where a player holds a pair as hole cards represents a real opportunity to extract chips due to the disguise of the hand.

Player love to play pocket pairs but the truth of the matter is that you will only ever hit your set once ever 7 or 8 hands. For this reason, it stands to reason that you should get in as cheap as possible and raise it up when you make your hand. A mistake novice (and some experienced) players make is that they place too much value on their pair pre flop. For instance calling away half your stack with a pair of 3's would not make much sense at all. If you could see the flop on the cheap, you fold if you miss and coin it in (with a little luck) if you hit.

If you miss on the flop and it is a small pair, you have very little chance to improve on the turn of river so you should get away from the hand if there are any overcards and you are faced with a relative sized bet.
