Online Poker Attrition – Europe Errs

Posted:October 2012

IGT has pulled out of Europe with Entraction poker, the rate of poker operators in France is fast falling prey to attrition, and Italian figures are indicating that online poker looks set to burn while the Government fiddles. IGT cited that regulator frameworks were a problem, French operators feel the same, and according to Italian news, regulations, plus low liquidity are the main problems that this industry faces.

Online Poker AttritionOnline gambling, and online poker are a mainstream Internet industry today, and we know for a fact that this genre is able to generate bountiful bucks for all stakeholders concerned. This means Governments too. It offers employment opportunities, as well as for online poker pros; IT is a high salary, hence tax generating concern.

Legalizing online poker, whilst at the same time tying its hands within too-strict regulatory frameworks, will not assist in stimulating any economy. By its very nature, gambling online is gambling without borders, however, this is apparently not meant to be. There is more than just a fine-line between general online gambling and playing online poker. Poker is a game of skill, while playing a slot game for example, could not be slotted (excuse the pun) into the skill game category.

It is for this reason we believe that European, and other Governments who lump online poker together with other online gambling activities are looking for trouble. They will see operators fold rather than see more signing on the licensing bottom line. This game needed to be treated with the respect it deserves, but now European online poker is falling prey to what we believe to be short-sighted stupidity.

Bodog has left Europe too, together with their poker product, this operator has set their sights on the Asian market, and quite honestly, they are sensibly looking where the liquidity is.
