Bwin.Party Poker - Fold For Now On The Party

Posted:October 2012

During a recent speech by Jim Ryan, who is co-chief executive officer of bwin.party (owner of Party Poker and Bwin Poker), he discussed the future of online poker for the USA. Considering that Bwin has recently sold Ongame Poker to Amaya Gaming, we assume that things in this industry might not be quite what they expected. Bwin.PartyHowever, the address was the Key-note Address for the Global Gaming Expo, hosted at Sands Expo and Convention Centre; and which took place last week.

When earlier this year, Jim Ryan accepted the honor of delivering this address, we rather think he had something a little more spectacular in mind. Something perhaps more like a victory lap. However, that was still when all in the online gambling biz, believed that it was only moments away from the Federal Government of the USA, making legal online poker. This still has not taken place. So there is no party on, or fireworks for bwin.party gaming, and no Federal framework in place to legalize online poker.

When the Gibraltar-based bwin.party first looked with envious eyes at the USA online poker market, they had some really big dreams. They also made sure they were well positioned to enter this marketplace. In fact, they had 3 partnership agreements in place to kick-off in the U.S. A.! It appears this was not meant to be.

Ryan said in his address - "I thought it would be magical and we would be the toast of the town."

Things got pretty dramatic as he spoke and a nose-bleed $4 billion online poker game displayed across screens in The Venetian's ballroom. It was a simulated freeroll game, to get his message of ‘missed opportunity’ across. The analogy was not lost on the persons present, but whether the analogy will ever become a reality for online poker, or Bwin.party in the USA; well this still remains to be seen.
