Aquarium (Poker)

You wouldn't have to be at a poker table long to hear the word 'Fish' or 'Aquarium' being used. In poker a player who is low skilled and is considered easy to beat is known as a 'Fish'. In line with this you often hear players saying, 'What a fishy call', or 'That was played like the true fish that you are'.

The term 'Fish' is usually branded about when a player calls a bet or goes all in with a really weak hand and wins, which is a common occurrence due to the nature and luck that poker 'brings to the table'. The player on the receiving end of the bad beat will usually be the one to use the term! Fish are renound for calling bets when the pot odds for making the call, don't add up. Fish play very much like low limit players and will make the call when there is the remotest chance of making a winning hand. Of course this is not a strategy to be adopted as more times than not, you will miss, each time committing valuable chips to the pot.

The term aquarium, if you haven't guessed already, is used to describe a gathering of fish (or low skilled players), considered to be easy money. This is not a term used specifically online, where there is perhaps more scope to find the fish, but rather can relate to any poker establishment or home game.

It should be added that where there are fish, particularly in terms of poker, there are sharks, who sit at the other end of the money tree. A shark is a strong player who tends to dominate weaker players as they continually put each pot to the test by continually raising. The best way to tackle a shark is to be patient and trap with monsters.
