Loose (Poker)

A player is said to be loose when they get involved in too many pots. Playing loose is a style of play and although it is not always the case, it is usually associated to a weak player who lacks the discipline to avoid over confrontation in too many betting situations.

A loose player is more of a gambler by trait, for the simple reason that they will enter pots with marginal hands to which they are usually a dog (underdog) from the outset. They will also hold onto their hands for considerably longer than a passive player, who would fold if they thought they were behind (rather than trying to catch cards where the odds don't warrant).

An extremely loose player is often called a calling station as they continually call bets when they should fold. The benefit to playing loose is that players will recognize this and you will often get paid off as players won't give you any credit when you hit a big hand and raise it up. A player holding a descent hand may well think that they are out in front (knowing that you play any two cards).

The opposite style of play is passive, where a player does not enter many pots at all, instead waiting for premium starting hands.
