Canada has once again been proving a safe haven for people with ‘refugee” status. The latest refugees from the USA have strangely enough been online poker players. When the USA took away the pros right to play this game, Canada welcomed them with open arms. Many stay in the country for the duration of online tournaments, while some have moved to the country semi permanently.
Canada is therefore not short of great poker pros, and a brand new live poker club has taken on a few pros of its own.
Probably the best known player of the new pros is Eugene Katchalov, he will be joined by Ylon Schwartz, Will (The Thrill) Failla, and home-boy, Canadian poker pro Mike “GoLeafsGoEh” Leah. Looking at these names, a whole host of originally “Canadian” players pops into mind, and we might even be forgiven for thinking that poker pros are one of Canada’s most famous exports.
The new brick and mortar - ‘VIP Poker Room’ – will be opening doors for business this month (February, 2013), in the city of Montreal. The owner – commenting – said they are delighted, as well as excited to have landed this coup. They are all fantastic people as well as outstanding poker players, so, members of the new club should be able to enjoy a professional playing experience, and we all know they will learn from these pros.
Failla is 46 years old, has $3,780,278 in live tournament cashes under his belt, and a WPT title. Katchalov is 32, and has amassed a rather nice $7,299,032 in winnings. He is also a WSOP and WPT title holder. Ylon Schwartz is 42, a chess master turned pro poker, WSOP bracelet winner, with $4,637,716 in live tournament cashes, he plays and wins prolifically also online. Last but not least - Leah is a talented circuit player with $1,522,350 in live cashes, and earnings of $2,331,596 online. He was also recruited for Phil Ivey’s new website.
